ENUGU STATE GOVERNMENT ORDERS THE SEALING OF SOME ILLEGAL MINING SITES.

The Government of Enugu State yesterday ordered the sealing of some illegal mining sites and sites without environmental impact certifications and mitigation plans, kick-starting with the Awhum community in the Udi local government Council of the state.

The Enugu State Commissioner for Environment Professor Sam Ugwu who led the Committee on Illegal Mining Activities to the mining site in Awhum, owned by Milehouse Limited said the action is meant to curb the harmful practices of illegal miners in the Awhum community.

Ugwu faulted the claim by the operators of the mining, that they started mining activities at the site in 2022, stating that from all indications, the site has been in operation for more than five years.

Meanwhile, the General Manager in charge of operations at the Awhum site Akintola Oluwafemi said the firm obtained all necessary licenses from the Federal Government and was also mindful of the environment in its operation, assuring that the company would comply with government directives.

Urban Radio Correspondent Ifeyinwa Ogbue, reported that other members of the Committee in the company of the chairman, included, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy and Mineral Resources, Kingsley Nnaji, the Special Adviser on Political Matters Frank Anioma, and Uche Anichukwu, the Senior Special Assistant on External Relations.
