From the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, the 2023 BET Awards were broadcast live. This year’s celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary lasted all night and featured specially prepared musical medleys by Kid Capri.

Lil Uzi Vert kicked off the performance before handing over to The Sugar Hill Gang, MC Lyte (who also acted as the show’s announcer), D-Nice, Big Daddy Kane, and a sing-along to the late Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend.” Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Jeezy, Kid ‘N Play, Master P, Redman, Remy Ma, Soulja Boy, Styles P, Warren G, Trina, and Trick Daddy all gave performances throughout the evening.

Drake had the most nominations among the 2023 candidates with seven, including Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Album of the Year for Her Loss alongside 21 Savage, and Viewers’ Favorite. Beyoncé, Burna Boy, Chris Brown, Ice Spice, and SZA came in second with four nominations apiece, followed by 21 Savage with five and Lizzo with four.

Tina Turner, the late Queen of Rock & Roll, received a tribute from the great Patti LaBelle, and Busta Rhymes received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
