Apple Music has unveiled its streaming figures for the conclusion of 2023, and it’s evident that Nigeria’s Afrobeats continues to dominate, particularly in Ghana. The data covers plays from November 1, 2022, to October 31, 2023.
Asake’s “Lonely At The Top” secured the top spot on the Ghana chart, with Victony and Tempoe’s “Soweto” following closely, and Young Jonn’s “Xtra Cool” claiming the third position. Ruger’s “Asiwaju” entered at fourth place, trailed by Omah Lay’s “soso” at fifth, Ayra Starr’s “Rush” at sixth, and Fireboy DML and Asake’s collaboration “Bandana” at seventh.
Davido’s Grammy-nominated “UNAVAILABLE” took the eighth spot, while Burna Boy’s “Last Last” and Asake’s “Terminator” rounded up the top rankings, showcasing a strong Nigerian presence in Ghana.
Afrobeats’ influence expanded beyond Ghana, reaching Kenya, where the top 10 was similarly dominated by Afrobeats tracks. “Soweto,” “Rush,” “Last Last,” “soso,” “Bandana,” and “Asiwaju” led the chart, with the remaining four songs being “Ta Ta Ta” by Bayanni, “KU LO SA” by Oxlade and Camila Cabello, “Charm” by Rema, and “People” by Libianca.
On a global scale, the remix of Rema’s hit “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez secured the 12th spot as the most streamed song, marking a significant achievement for African music on the international stage.
